Do Squirrels Eat Cherry Pits?

Cherry pits are the seeds found inside a cherry when we eat it. Cherry pits aren’t meant to be swallowed by human beings as they could cause harm.

A cherry pit covers the seed until it evolves fully, and eating a cherry pit is equal to eating a cherry seed. But, squirrels can consume cherry pits along with the fruit. However, cherry pits can cause harm to a squirrel’s health or immune system too because of cyanide.

It is believed that while a squirrel nibbles on a cherry pit, they simultaneously drop some of the pits on the ground due to their habit of eating haphazardly.

Dropping of the cherry pits in different regions gives birth to a lot many cherry trees and plants. Hence, squirrels can be fed with cherry pits to a limit. The cherry pits can cause harm to a squirrel’s body because it carries high amounts of cyanide. But, feeding cherry pits to squirrels comes as a great help.

Squirrels unknowingly improve our environment by planting more trees and increasing the oxygen supply in the background.

So, yes, squirrels can eat cherry pits, but they should be fed in a minimal quantity only. However, they have fewer side effects on the little rodent’s health or body.

Can Squirrels Eat Cherry Seeds?

Humans should not consume a cherry seed because it contains cyanide which isn’t intended for human consumption.

However, a squirrel loves to eat cherries and other berries and fruits too. They do not pay heed to the cherry seed or the cherry pit and consume it indiscriminately. It can cause harm to the squirrel’s health sometimes. Instead, with haphazard consumption, squirrels often drop the seeds at various places giving birth to trees.

Many birds, along with a squirrel, can eat a cherry seed. Birds like woodpeckers, tanagers, bluebirds, thrushes, Cedar Waxwings, and Orioles can eat these seeds

Mammals that include squirrels, chipmunks, foxes, black bears, and even mice can eat the seeds of the cherry fruit.

Are Cherry Pits Toxic to Squirrels?

The cherry pits can be toxic for a squirrel sometimes because they contain high amounts of cyanide which can suffocate an animal at times.

Hence, some researchers strictly advise that pits from stone fruits like plums, peaches, nectarines, and cherries shouldn’t be fed to a squirrel.

The mischievous little rodents are more likely to fall sick if they consume too many of the cherry pits. Hence, the number of cherry pits should be monitored well.

Can Birds Eat Cherry Pits?

All fruits and vegetables are safe for a bird to consume in a small quantity, but certain fruits that consist of seeds and pits shouldn’t be fed to a bird.

Fruits like pears, apples, cherries, peaches, plums, nectarines, and apricots should be taken care of before feeding birds because they contain seeds and pits. These seeds and pits contain small amounts of cyanide.

If the seeds and pits are removed from these fruits, then consumption of these fruits will become absolutely safe and secure.

The seeds of fruits like grapes, squash, citrus fruits, tomatoes, mangoes, pumpkins, melons, berries, and pomegranates are safe for consumption by a bird.

How To Get Rid of Squirrels From My Garden?

Squirrels are cute little rodents with little bright eyes that have sharp paws that can ruin your garden and fields.

A squirrel can take up your garden fruits. A squirrel infestation could go from looking cute to highly destructive. So, here are some precautions to save your fields.

1. Using Odors That Squirrels Don’t Like

We know that squirrels have sensitive twitchy noses when it comes to aromas. There are a lot of smells that a squirrel cannot stand.

It would be best if you tried to spread coffee grounds all over your gardens, this way, the soil will benefit, and the squirrels won’t be able to nag around your garden.

Squirrels even hate the smell of mint, and people often tend to fill their garden with pots of mint to prevent them from the paws of the little rodent.

They hate the aroma of peppermint, and using it to drive away the little rodents can prove effective. Mix some drops of peppermint oil and water.

Then spray this mixture all over your field or your garden. This way, the smell will pervade all over the area barring the squirrel from that particular area.

Squirrels despise chili flakes vehemently. Scattering chili, white cayenne, and black or white pepper over the field will ensure that the rodent does not come near the area.

2. Plant Flowers That Have a Strong Scent

Although squirrels love to nibble on different kinds of flowers, there are certain flowers that they vehemently despise.

For instance, we like the smell of lilies and hyacinths, but little critters like squirrels intensely hate their smell and run away.

Similarly, squirrels do not like the oniony scent of the allium family, and adding this flower at the borders of your garden will prevent it from getting destroyed.

Flowers that belong to the allium family are straightforward to grow, and they give an excellent architectural structure to a garden, so one should try them to ward off the squirrels.

3. Buy Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeders

If you have got feathery friends at your house, you probably might have a bird feeder too.

But, squirrels are naughty creatures, and they can steal from the bird feeder. To avoid this situation, you should take a squirrel-proof bird feeder.

If you face problems in feeding your bird because of squirrels, then it is high time that you trade for a squirrel-proof bird feeder.

These squirrel-proof bird feeders have a cage around them that guards the food against a squirrel. But the bird will still be able to access the food very conveniently.

Birds love to eat chilies and products that have a tint of them, so you can find the food that is made up of chilies and serve it to the birds.

Meanwhile, squirrels intensely hate chilies and any other food product that contains chili or chili flakes. Hence, they won’t try to steal from a bird feeder.

Squirrel-proof bird feeders are generally cone-shaped. Whenever a squirrel tries to climb, they tilt to a side and prevent the squirrel from accessing the bird’s food.

4. Deter the Squirrel From Reaching Your Loft

The best way to prevent the little rodent from making a home in the loft is by stopping it from getting into the attic.

It would be a good idea if you cut the branches of the trees and even the climbers which facilitate the squirrel’s climb towards the loft.

You should check for wires that could be helping the little rodents to climb up to the loft. Such pathways can pose as help to the squirrels.

5. Let Your Pets Out on the Field

If you own a cat or a dog or any pet that can easily scare off a squirrel, let it out in the garden or the field. Your pet dog or cat is likely to chase away the little critter.

This will scare the squirrel, and it will think twice before coming to your garden or field. The little creature will think about choosing a safer place next time.

6. Adding a Decoy Predator

A decoy predator is a prominent figure which resembles another animal. To scare off squirrels, the best you can do is to use a decoy predator.

Using a decoy predator, the squirrel will not dare to come near the field or the garden. This way, you will get rid of squirrels, and they won’t bug in your area.

Final Thoughts

Squirrels can eat cherry pits, but since they contain a large amount of cyanide, they shouldn’t be served in excess to the little rodents. They can cause harm to their body.

Cherry pits and seeds should be removed before being fed to any animal, as cyanide can deteriorate anyone’s health and immune system.

Driving away from a squirrel from a garden or a field can be a difficult task, but we have suggested a few things that you could do. We hope this article helped you!
